Nightmare Reaper in the test: One of the best shooters of the year

A few years ago, they were suddenly there: ego shooter in retro style, graphically often for fear, playful grenades. No matter whether Dusk, Project Warlock, Ion Fury or Amid Evil, they all brought ball fun like from the 90s and collected people at all great ratings. So Nightmare Reaper is in the best company - and even takes a few steps further! Behind the pixelated retro look is not only a brute shooter, but also many modern game ideas that merge into a captivating overall package. Nightmare Reaper spent three years of development in the early access, the trouble noticed the result. The shooter surprise has been finished since March 28, but despite great user ratings (94 percent on Steam), many players still fly under the radar. We say: wrongly! Because Nightmare Reaper is a lot of fun when you get involved. And that can cost a surprising amount of time: Nightmare Reaper can be played through "already" in about 20 hours, but we have invested more than twice the time for our test.

Initially you are in stock -found caves, later you can also go to forests, mines and offices, in sunken temples, hospitals and room stations, in overgrowed grottos and bizarre rugged harbor areas. The level generator does not even have the trouble to build credible environments: all levels are basically composed of blocks as if they had previously been excavated in Minecraft. There are dead ends, strangely placed elevators and stairs that mislead us. Closed doors are of course open with keys, and switches later use the new paths. After a while we also get a gripping hook with which we can overcome huge distances, from here the level design becomes even more crazy. Fortunately, no level is so big that you can get in it for a long time. After all, action is on the program!

Weapons without end

No matter whether in chests, boxes or other containers, random weapons are hidden everywhere, sometimes defeated opponents leave new bullets. The selection is impressive: over 80 close and ranged weapons are on offer, often with a second fire mode. It captures machine guns and shotguns, Granate and rocket launchers, chainsaws, energy-scale, chain whips, magic bars, magical books, ice boxes, throwing axes and much more. If you are lucky, you may catch a handy atomic bomb thrower, a huge orbital cannon or a magical urn that creates flying spirits, which will automatically put your enemies on the grain. But not only the diversity is enthusiastic. Most weapons also just really mood, feel strong and ensure hearty splatter effects - many AAA shooters can cut off a few slices.
